Biophysics of protein-DNA interactions, chromosomes, and cell nuclei
Northwestern University
Long DNA molecules - centimeters in length in the case of human cells - are organized inside the cell by being folded into micron-sized chromosomes.  This folding is done by an array of proteins which keep the chromosome neatly compacted while allowing the DNA to be read, replicated and repaired.  I will discuss our lab's biophysical force-measurement and visualization experiments, aimed at studying how tiny nanometer-scale protein molecules are able to deal with huge DNA molecules, both from the perspective of experiments examining the interaction of individual proteins and DNA segments, and from the perspective of whole chromosomes and whole nuclei.

Rev. Lett.

Dr. Marko is Professor in the Departments of Molecular Biosciences and Physics & Astronomy, Northwestern University.  He serves in the Admissions Committee of both departments. He received his B.Sc. from the University of Alberta, and then did his Ph.D. at M.I.T.  He did postdoctoral work at University of Chicago and Cornell University, and then was a research fellow at Rockefeller University.  He started his lab at the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1996, and moved to Northwestern in 2006. Professor Marko is particularly well known for his work on polymer physics of DNA, DNA-protein complexes, and chromosomes, and has developed experimental as well as theoretical techniques used in the single-molecule field. He has published more than 170 papers and has been cited for more than 10,000 times. He has received the CAREER Award from the US National Science Foundation and is a Fellow of the American Physical Society.
